Magda by Gianina (RO)
Performative readers theatre by Gianina Cărbunariu
In a special readers theatre performance, Gianina Cărbunariu brings to life the story of director Magda Bordeianu. In 1968, as a university student, Bordeianu founded the Attic Theatre at the Student Culture House in Bucharest. The company immediately attracted wide professional attention and went on to shape generations of theatre-makers.
Gianina Cărbunariu retells this story from a contemporary perspective, drawing on archival materials, personal memories, and her own experiences as a young director in post-communist Romania. The performance brings two generations into dialogue: the first wave of artists to emerge after the Second World War, and the first to grow up in freedom after the Revolution of 1989.
Brought to the 11th pulzArt festival, the piece invites us to reflect on the freedom of expression, the consequences of personal choices, and how history – spoken or untold – continues to shape today’s art.
The reading will be in Romanian, with Hungarian subtitles, followed by a discussion with the audience.
