Alex Koo is hailed as one of Belgium’s most original and innovative jazz pianists, with an international career highlighted by awards, accolades, and features in prestigious publications across the United States and Europe.
Praised by Downbeat Jazz Magazine as “astonishingly original”, Koo is known for crafting music that transcends boundaries, blending jazz with elements of indie, contemporary classical music, and film soundtracks. His performances are marked by technical mastery, surprising touches, and powerful compositions, often reminiscent of 1970s American film scores and the energy of groundbreaking jazz improvisation.
In November, Alex Koo will perform in Romania for the very first time, presenting his project “Studies for Solo Piano”, commissioned by BOZAR Brussels. This work showcases his passion for both jazz and classical traditions, merging influences ranging from Debussy, Chopin, Reich, and Rachmaninoff to Keith Jarrett, Craig Taborn, Brian Eno, and Philip Glass. The album was acclaimed as “a colourful work that keeps the listener on the edge of their seat” (L’Echo ★★★★).
Born to a Belgian missionary in Japan and a Japanese peace activist, Alex Koo resists conventional labels, with Jazzthetik writing that “Alex Koo defies any categorization.”
