Arctic Monkeys is an English rock band, formed in 2002 in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield. The band consists of Alex Turner (vocals, lead/rhythm guitar), Jamie Cook (lead/rhythm guitar), Nick O'Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Matt Helders (drums, backing vocals). Former member Andy Nicholson (bass guitar, backing vocals) left the band in 2006, shortly after the release of their debut album.
To date, the band has released seven studio albums: Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006), Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), Humbug (2009), Suck It and See (2011), AM (2013), Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino (2018), and The Car (2022), as well as two live albums: At the Apollo (2008) and Live at the Royal Albert Hall (2020).
Their debut album is the "fastest-selling" debut album in British music history, surpassing the band Elastica with their self-titled album. In 2013, Rolling Stone ranked the same album at number 30 on the list of the greatest debut albums of all time.
The band has won seven BRIT Awards—including “Best British Group” and “Best British Album” three times—and has been nominated five times for the Grammy Awards. They also won the Mercury Prize in 2006 for Best Album, receiving three more nominations in 2007, 2013, and 2018. The band headlined the Glastonbury Festival twice, in 2007 and 2013.
Arctic Monkeys are considered one of the first musical groups to gain fame through the Internet, with analysts suggesting that they represent a potential change in the way new bands are promoted and marketed.
