Geboren in Toronto verbrachte Katie Stelmanis, Songschreiberin der Band, viel Zeit ihres jungen Lebens mit dem obsessiven Studium klassischer Musik. Sie schwelgte in den Arbeiten von Puccini, Debussy, Mozart und Bach und arbeitete daran, professionelle Opernsängerin zu werden. Für Austra hat Katie sich der Talente ihrer Langzeit-Freundin und Produzentin Maya Postepski versichert. Sie bringt ihre Erfahrungen ein, um die Songs von Katie (inzwischen besessen von Bands wie "Nine Inch Nails" und "The Knife“) weiter auszufeilen. Dorian Wolf, vormals Bassist der kanadischen Indierock Band "Spiral Beach", komplettiert das Duo bei Live-Auftritten.
