Coldplay is a British alternative rock and piano-rock band from London, United Kingdom, and one of the most famous bands in the world. The group consists of Chris Martin, Jon Buckland, Guy Berryman, and Will Champion. Coldplay is among the most successful bands of the new millennium, having sold over 50 million albums worldwide. The band is also known for its hit singles “Speed of Sound,” “Clocks,” and “Viva la Vida.” It has received numerous Grammy Awards.
Coldplay rose to international fame with the release of the single “Yellow,” followed by the success of their debut album Parachutes (2000), which was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Both Parachutes and their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), achieved immense success; the latter was named Album of the Year by NME. Their third album, X&Y (2005), also received critical acclaim.
Starting in late 2006, the band worked with producer Brian Eno on their fourth studio album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008). The album won two Grammy Awards—for Best Rock Album and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. The single “Viva la Vida” also earned the Grammy Award for Song of the Year (2008).
Coldplay’s early material was often compared to that of Jeff Buckley, U2, and Travis. Since the release of Parachutes, the band has drawn inspiration from a variety of artists, such as Echo & the Bunnymen and George Harrison for A Rush of Blood to the Head, and Johnny Cash and Kraftwerk for X&Y.
