Wouter "Wally" De Backer, professionally known by his stage name Gotye, is a Belgian-Australian multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. The name “Gotye” is derived from “Gauthier,” the French equivalent of “Walter” or “Wouter.” His voice has been compared to those of Sting and Peter Gabriel.
Gotye has released three independent albums and one album containing remixes of his first two albums. He is also a member of the independent pop trio The Basics, who have independently released three studio albums and numerous other works since 2002. His 2011 single, “Somebody That I Used to Know,” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making him the fifth Australian and second Belgian (after Soeur Sourire in 1963) to achieve this. He has also won five ARIA Awards and was nominated for an MTV EMA for Best Asia/Pacific Act. Gotye has described himself as being less of a musician and more of a craftsman.
