Jonas Kaufmann was born on July 10, 1969, in Munich, West Germany.
He began his higher education studying mathematics but shifted to vocal studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Munich in 1989, graduating in 1994. His professional debut took place at the Saarländisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken from 1994 to 1996. From that point, he embarked on a freelance career, performing at leading opera houses worldwide including La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House and the Vienna State Opera.
Kaufmann is celebrated for his exceptional technique and remarkable versatility across German, French and Italian repertoire. He has won numerous awards and honors, establishing himself as one of the most important tenors of his generation. He holds dual German-Austrian citizenship and lives near Munich.
