Mobb Deep was a legendary American hip hop duo formed in Queens, New York, in 1990, consisting of rappers/producers Prodigy and Havoc. Widely regarded as pioneers of hardcore East Coast hip-hop, they rose to become one of the most respected and influential rap groups of the 1990s and 2000s.
Their landmark albums The Infamous (1995), Hell on Earth (1996), and Murda Muzik (1999) defined the gritty, dark sound of Queensbridge hip-hop. Iconic tracks like “Shook Ones Part II” and “Survival of the Fittest” remain timeless anthems of street culture and rap history.
Over their career, Mobb Deep sold more than three million records and collaborated with major artists including Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige, and many others. Known for Havoc’s stark, minimalist production and Prodigy’s raw lyrical delivery, their music offered an unflinching portrayal of urban life in New York City.
Although the group disbanded at times, they reunited for a 20th-anniversary tour in 2013. Tragically, Prodigy passed away in June 2017, but their legacy remains a cornerstone of hip hop culture. In 2025, Havoc and producer The Alchemist announced a new album, Infinite, with Nas also involved in the project.
Today, Mobb Deep is remembered as one of the most influential rap duos of all time, a symbol of authenticity, intensity, and the enduring power of East Coast hardcore hip-hop.
