Shining dolaze iz Osla, a osnovani su 1999. godine od kada je kroz bend prošlo čak 13 glazbenika, dok je Jorgen Munkeby (vokal, saksofon i gitara) ostao jedini stalan član. Band je u početku svirao akustični jazz, da bi s godinama ubacivali sve više instrumenata i na kraju završili i u nekim ekstremnijim metal žanrovima. Crpeći inspiraciju od artista na potezu od Johna Coltranea do Nine Inch Nailsa stvaraju muziku nazvanu blackjazz, a upravo tako nazvan album iz 2010. doveo ih je do najveći svjetskih medija, od Metal Hammera i Pitchforka do New York Timesa. Na kontu imaju sedam studijskih izdanja, od kojih je posljednje, «International Blackjazz Society», objavljeno 2015. godine.
