Shadow of Objects
In this workshop, we will draw inspiration from the photographs taken by Constantin Brâncuși, who paid special attention to light, shadows, and the way they transform how we perceive an object. For Brâncuși, photography was not merely a tool for documentation, but a means of discovering new perspectives and highlighting the forms of his sculptures.
In the practical part of the workshop, we will explore the relationship between an object and its shadow using charcoal. Participants will observe simple objects illuminated from a specific direction and create drawings that emphasize shadows, contrasts, and volume. Rather than focusing on every detail of the object, they will be encouraged to observe how light constructs form and how the shadow can become just as important as the object itself. Through hatching, tonal shading, and gradients, we will discover how charcoal can convey atmosphere, depth, and the expressive qualities of an image.
During the workshop, children will learn:
- how to observe the relationship between light and shadow
- how to use charcoal to represent volume and contrast
- how to view the objects around us through a perspective inspired by Brâncuși’s artistic photography
