Die Alabama Shakes wurden 2009 von Sängerin Brittany Howard und Bassist Zac Cockrell gegründet. Erst später wurden auch Gitarrist Heath Fogg und Schlagzeuger Steve Johnson mit ins Boot geholt. Die Musik der amerikanischen Band reicht von Southern Rock bis hinzu Blues.
2011 veröffentlichten die Alabama Shakes ein gleichnamiges selbstproduziertes Album mit ersten Songs. Ein Jahr darauf erschien das erste offizielle Album „Boys & Girls“, mit dem sie vor allem in Amerika und Großbritannien Erfolge feiern konnten.
Ihr neuestes Werk „Sound & Color“ erschien im April 2015 und landete prompt auf Platz eins der US-amerikanischen Charts. Im Sommer 2015 starten sie ihre große Tour durch Amerika und Europa.
