The Elvira Godeanu Drama Theatre in Târgu Jiu was founded in 1993 by Decision No. 9/June 11 of the Gorj County Council. Since April 1999, the theatre has been operating under the authority of the Local Council and City Hall of Târgu Jiu.
Since its establishment, the theatre has staged and performed numerous productions both in Romania and abroad, featuring works from classical and contemporary drama, both Romanian and international. Beginning in 2000, the institution organizes the annual “Elvira Godeanu Days”, and since 2003, it has hosted the “Constantin Stanciovici Brănișteanu” Theatre Festival for Students, a competition dedicated to high school students passionate about theatre.
In 2019, the theatre launched the first edition of the “Elvira Godeanu” Theatre Festival, a competition designed to promote and celebrate female excellence in the performing arts.
